Review by Horn Book Review

This fifteenth anniversary edition of the 2004 Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe illustration winner is part of an initiative to bring CSK Award recipients back into print. This is my family. We all love music, begins the story about an African American girl whose family members all perform in bands, orchestras, or groups that play different types of music (This is my mom. She plays fiddle in a country-and-western band; This is my dad. He plays cello in a string quartet; This is my grandpa. He plays tuba in a polka band). Each spread sets a different musical scene, with the girl always participating to the best of her ability (I play the tambourine / I play the triangle / I play the rhythm sticks). Readers come away with the impression of a close-knit and lovingand musically diverseextended family. Browns cut-paper-collage illustrations exude warmth and vibrancy, creating inviting tableauxin flat slabs of both bright color and earth tones (from the Horn Book Guide review). elissa Gershowitz (c) Copyright 2018.
