Bodie Troll

Jay P. Fosgitt

Book - 2018

What Bodie Troll lacks in ferocity, he makes up in spirit! ALL FEAR THE GUARDIAN OF HAGADORN! Bodie Troll is a fearsome creature. The villagers of Hagadorn whisper tales of his ferociousness and tread lightly when they cross his bridge. At least . . . that's what Bodie would like to think. Despite his desires to strike fear in the hearts of others, Bodie is a cute and cuddly grump of a troll. But what he might lack in ferocity, he makes up for in spirit. Alongside his Fairy Godmother and his best friend Cholly, Bodie has a habit of finding trouble and adventure. Whether it's protecting the village from spellbound beasts or performing shape-changing theater, Bodie Troll is up for the challenge. If he's lucky, he just might sca...re someone along the way. Written and illustrated by Jay Fosgitt (Rocket Raccoon & Groot), Bodie Troll is a rollicking fantasy adventure celebrating the importance of stalwart friendships and being true to oneself.

Review by Booklist Review

Bodie is a tiny troll who wants to be frightening and feared by all; too bad everyone in town thinks he's the cutest thing in the village of Hagadorn. Undeterred, Bodie spends most of the book trying to improve (or rather destroy) his reputation with various schemes, which never end up going his way. Luckily his friends are there to bail him out when things get too crazy, and to help him see himself as a hero. As a whole, the appealing story perfectly channels other classic children's graphic novels, such as Jeff Smith's Bone (2004). Fosgitt's comic has a similar commitment to epic storytelling beautifully told through a retro artistic style that simply jumps off the page with its sharp outlines, exaggerated figures, and lush color work. The additional layering of slapstick humor and tons of heart make this well-rounded and resonant. Though the humor can be crass at times (poo and pee jokes abound), it's pitch-perfect for the target audience, who are likely to adore Bodie for just who he is, a misunderstood and caring soul.--Peter Blenski Copyright 2018 Booklist
