However, as a consequence of his actions during the Ludus uprising, Fallon's love Cai has been stripped of his Decurion rank and cast down to serve as one of Caesar's gladiators. Amid fighting for Cai's freedom, Fallon soon learns that Caesar's enemies are plotting against him and planning to get revenge on his fearsome gladiatrices. When Caesar is murdered by these conspirators, Fallon and the girls lose any sort of protection they once had. Fallon also realizes that the foreign queen Cleopatra is now in grave danger. Fallon rallies her war band and Cai's friends to get Cleo...patra out of the city, and the group heads to the safety of Cleo's homeland, Alexandria, Egypt. Once there, the gladiatrices are promised a place of honor in the queen's elite guard, but is that what any of them really want?

When Julius Caesar is assassinated there are deadly repercussions for the Ludus Achillea gladiatrices and their friend Cleopatra of Aegypt. Knowing that their only hope is escape, Fallon; her Roman lover, Cai; and their closest friends decide to safeguard Cleopatra's return home. But there is also danger to Fallon's homeland, Prydain (modern-day Britain), and she must return there to save her own people. A follow-up to The Valiant (2017) and The Defiant (2018), Livingston's tale of fighting women, friendships, loyalty, and love brings Roman and early British history alive through the eyes of a teenager coming to know herself and her value. Historical facts and figures are invigorated by fight scenes, treachery, and characters that are living rather than relating the events of the day. There are references to the gods and goddesses of the various regions of the world: Dis, Sekhemet, and the Morrigan, for example, all of whom are portrayed as vibrant presences in the people's daily life.
