Review by Booklist Review

Islam can be confusing to many non-Muslims, whose understanding is frequently filled with inaccuracies. This comprehensive volume in the Understanding World Religions and Beliefs series sets the record straight about the fastest growing religion around the globe. It gives a solid background on the prophet Muhammad, his teachings through the Koran, and the spread of Islam. A chapter on the years following Muhammad's death describe the disagreement over his successor and differences in interpreting the prophet's words, which caused a split between Shi'ites and Sunnis that continues today. Perhaps the most relevant chapters to understanding Islam are those on the religion's core beliefs, how it is practiced, its spread to Western countries, and numerous debates and misconceptions. For instance, these chapters help readers grasp such important concepts as differing interpretations of jihad, controversies surrounding terrorism, why some African Americans identify as Muslim, head coverings, Islam and feminism, and racist depictions of Muslims in the media. Large, high-quality color photos and plenty of sidebars provide more context. The biggest takeaway, however, is an emphasis on tolerance.--Angela Leeper Copyright 2018 Booklist
