Review by Booklist Review
Star-crossed lovers Noemi and Abel, caught in the war between Noemi's home planet (Genesis) and Earth, have triumphed for the moment but at the potential cost of Noemi's life. Her mortal injuries require the kind of help that can only come from the brilliant family that created Abel, a mech a machine with a soul and saving her may very well cost him his life in return. Abel is still being pursued for his body (as a host for his dead creator's consciousness); Genesis and Earth remain at war, although Earth's treachery has been exposed; and now Noemi struggles with the bionics that saved her life, yet changed it forever. Readers are thrust headlong into ever-escalating situations, a sort of continuous catch-and-escape cycle, that is enriched by Gray's command of detail and commitment to character. Background knowledge from Defy the Stars (2017) and Defy the Worlds (2018) will definitely be handy for keeping up with characters, situations, and circumstances.--Cindy Welch Copyright 2019 Booklist
