Beagle, well known for the classic The Last Unicorn (1968), has compiled further fantastical stories about the creatures, exploring a range of beliefs and myths, from the magical attraction of unicorns to maidens to the enchantment of a unicorn tattoo. In Carlos Hernandez's The Magical Properties of Unicorn Ivory, a visiting journalist explores the English woods with a forest ranger, searching for unicorns who have trasversed black holes to our world from other parts of the multiverse. Several other stories explore the healing properties of the unicorn horn, including Karen Joy Fowler's The Brew and Caitlín R. Kiernan's The Maltese Unicorn. Falling Off the Unicorn, by David D. Levin and Sara A. Mueller, explores unicorns as horse-like show animals, with some appropriate limitations based on legend. A handful of stories, including Unicorn Triangle by Patricia A. McKillip, are written from the unicorn's perspective. Rounding out the collection are some tales where unicorns are not ultimately good, topping off a delightful array of entries from some of today's most beloved fantasy writers.--Frances Moritz Copyright 2019 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

This slender but rich anthology compiled by Beagle and Weisman (The New Voices of Fantasy) centers on the mythical beast for which Beagle is best known, thanks to his classic novel The Last Unicorn. The 15 stories and one poem reinterpret the unicorn myth across genre and style. Caitlín R. Kiernan's lesbian noir "The Maltese Unicorn" pits a hard-boiled rare book dealer against a sorcerous femme fatale. In Jane Yolen's delicate "The Transfigured Hart," a bookish boy and a horse-loving girl bond over a shared obsession with a mysterious white woodland creature. Dave Smeds's "Survivor" includes elements of horror in its tale of a traumatized Vietnam vet, as does Garth Nix's "The Highest Justice," in which a princess and a revenant queen seek revenge with the help of a unicorn. Themes of innocence lost, first love, and yearning for transcendence pervade all of the stories in this collection, giving it a haunting and melancholy feel. Readers who love the mystery and elegance of unicorns will find this a lovely homage. (Apr.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Gr 10 Up-In this cutting-edge compilation of stories by prominent fantasy and young adult authors (Bruce Coville, Carlos Hernandez, Garth Nix, Jane Yolen, and more), readers meet unicorns outside of their typical pastoral settings. Reminiscent of Grimms' fairy tales, most of these short stories will resonate with teens as they dive into the edgy worlds of unicorns. From hunters-of-horns to dreamlike villages, teens can immerse themselves in the great writing styles of these well-versed authors. Anthologies always allow readers an opportunity to explore many different authors, and young people will come away from this one wanting to seek out more from each contributor. VERDICT A great read for lovers of adult fantasy stories.-Cathleen Ash, Manor High School Library, TX © Copyright 2019. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
