Longtime fans of Armentrout will be thrilled that hero Zayne finally gets a series of his own. First introduced in the Dark Elements series, he returns here with his delicious world of demons and gargoyles in an explosive new story. Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow's ability to communicate with spirits makes her a target for demons, so she's guarded by gargoyle Wardens, sworn protectors of humankind. Her path crosses with Zayne's when he arrives at Trinity's compound with news that demons and Wardens, of which he is one, are both being slaughtered. With a supernatural war on the rise, Trinity and Zayne must work together to find out who is committing the murders, thwart a supernatural war, and protect Trinity's life at all costs. While the pacing feels off-kilter at times and the beginning may drag for some readers, the second half of the book kicks up the action and skyrockets readers to the end. As always, Armentrout excels in building a paranormal romance world that is believable, accessible, and riveting.--Enishia Davenport Copyright 2019 Booklist

Gr 7 Up-This first installment of the series is a spin-off of Armentrout's "Dark Elements" trilogy with some of the same characters. Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow, who is losing her sight, has a well-kept secret. She can see and talk to the dead and must remain in a compound that is guarded by Wardens who are shape-shifting gargoyles. They must protect her from demons who want to capture her to take on her special powers. However, a new threat arrives, and Trinity joins forces with Zayne, a Warden from another clan, in order to save her family. Fans of "Dark Elements" will be excited for Zayne to find romance with Trinity, who is a strong character with good instincts. The action and suspense build with each chapter, making this a compelling read. Readers will anxiously await the next installment in this series, and libraries will find it difficult to keep this one on the shelf. VERDICT Recommended. Fans of the "Dark Elements" trilogy will enjoy revisiting this world with the same characters.-Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI © Copyright 2019.
