Rapper Nicki Minaj is thoughtfully profiled in the new Stars of Hip-Hop series (8 titles). This slim biography walks readers through Minaj's early life in Trinidad and New York City, where she navigated challenges wrought from living in a crime-addled neighborhood and her father's struggles with addiction. These trials aren't the focus of the book, however. Minaj's drive and hard work to be a successful music star, plus her wild fashion sense (captured in many of the book's photos), dominate and create a portrait of a unique, talented artist. Her commitment to charitable causes and dedication to her mother also shine through in the text. Quotes from Minaj add personality to the chapters and are cited in the back matter. The rapper's popularity ensures this book will have plenty of fans.--Julia Smith Copyright 2010 Booklist
