Women The National Geographic image collection

Published in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of more than 450 photos from National Geographic's archive depicts the changing roles of women from the magazine's first published photo of a female subject in 1896 (almost 20 years after the first issue) to the present day. The images are arranged according to six themes joy, beauty, love, wisdom, strength, and hope resulting in juxtapositions of photos from disparate eras and locations that reveal unexpected commonalities. The book's editors take an expansive, inclusive view of the themes; for example, beauty is defined as unadorned, natural, and multicultural, while the chapter on love depicts familial, romantic, and altruistic relationships across gender, age, kinship, and national origin. While most of the photos are allowed to speak for themselves, Through the Lens essays interspersed throughout allow photographers (all women) to reflect on the significance of a particular image. The book also includes ""Portraits of Power,"" interviews with and recent portraits of more than two-dozen iconic contemporary women, including gun-control activist Emma Gonzalez, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour.
