Review by Library Journal Review

Based on 13 books by Winston Graham (1908-2003), this BBC series was widely acclaimed when it first aired in the 1970s. Beautifully acted, exceptionally well written, and lavishly produced, it presents a gripping and romantic historical tale that explores changing times and their effect on the social mores of society. Its depictions of the class system of late 18th-century England and Cornwall's rural mining economy are detailed and sharply drawn. The foibles of its heroes and flashes of humanity in its villains add to the authenticity. Starring Robin Ellis as Capt. Ross Poldark, the series leaves viewers holding their collective breath from one episode to the next. Recently reissued on DVD, the set will provide many hours of viewing pleasure. Graham continued writing and publishing books in the Poldark series until shortly before his death at the age of 95. Bonus features include historical background on Cornwall. Highly recommended for fans of the modern English novel.-Sheila S. Intner, Emerita, Simmons GSLIS at Mt. Holyoke Coll., South Hadley, MA (c) Copyright 2010.
