Young guns Obsession, Overwatch, and the future of gaming

Austin Moorhead

Book - 2020

"Welcome to the high-stakes world of esports where shit-talking teenage gamers, billionaire sports franchise owners, and celebrity entrepreneurs are all competing to understand and conquer the fast-emerging future of entertainment. The burgeoning frontier of professional gaming has moved beyond the niche corners of the internet to become a global phenomenon, upending youth viewership for the major sports leagues and opening a generational rift over the nature of "athletics." Soon, professional video game competitions may well be as ingrained in our culture as Monday Night Football."--Amazon.com.

Review by Library Journal Review

Moorhead's first book gives readers an insight into the history, and popularity, of eSports, including some of the key players, owners, and coaches involved with the sport. Professional eSports have been incredibly popular internationally over the past few years and recently have become mainstream in the United States. Moorhead delves into players' individual stories, helping to create a more complete narrative. Additionally, he does an excellent job of capturing the skepticism that some parties involved felt at times with investing and participating in a new league. Currently, there are not many books published that delve into this new professional league. As a result, this is an important contribution. Moorhead's accessibility and storytelling makes this a compelling read not only for those passionate about eSports, but for anyone who wants to learn more about eSports leagues. Notably, the author gives insight into how the Overwatch League has developed and gained staying power as a professional sports league. VERDICT Complete with details of conversations with those involved from Overwatch, this fast-paced, highly recommended book will appeal to readers interested in learning more about eSports and their growing popularity.--Pamela Calfo, Bridgeville P.L., PA
