Sixteen-year-old Finn Miller is excited to spend the weekend in the mountains with her family and her best friend, Mo. But the family's getaway becomes a desperate quest for survival when their RV tumbles down the side of a mountain, killing Finn instantly and gravely injuring her father. Most survival stories end with a rescue--this one follows the victims as they readjust to everyday life, struggling with their "new normal." Every choice made has consequences that echo long after they have physically healed, and each of the survivors has their own perspective on what happened during the tense hours before rescue. As the truth is revealed, lives are changed, relationships are destroyed, and forgiveness is difficult to come by. The story is narrated by Finn, who watches over her family from the afterlife. While the tension is highest during the survival and rescue scenes, Redfearn (No Ordinary Life, 2016) keeps the momentum going as the Millers struggle with grief and post-traumatic stress. The characters are sensitively portrayed, as is their recovery, and the hopeful ending is realistic. Readers of domestic dramas will be enthralled.
