This accessible work offers a relatively comprehensive review of a topic that has been much discussed in published media. Summarizing the most recent scientific findings on global warming and technological developments for controlling the impact of CO2, the book aims to convey a picture of an emissions-free future environment to its readers. Authors Ozin and Ghoussoub (both, Univ. of Toronto) present an overview of the latest developments in research on CO2 capture and its conversion/reuse for production of a wide range of products including feedstock chemicals, fertilizers, drugs, plastics, steel, cement, synthetic fuels, and more. They also emphasize giving due attention to the diversity of perspectives on environmental issues in developing new policies, since effective policies are as crucial as existing advanced technologies, if not more so, for achieving the overall changes that are required to move planet Earth toward a low-carbon future. Ozin and Ghoussoub argue that climate change is an ethical and political issue that cannot be resolved without confronting current socioeconomic inequalities as a step toward fulfilling our obligation to future generations. They suggest that controlling population growth is not an effective approach to meeting near-term emissions goals, while also claiming that it is possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions without compromising economic growth.
