The magic of found objects A novel

Maddie Dawson

Book - 2021

"Phronsie Linnelle was conceived at Woodstock in a serendipitous liaison between a free-spirited hippie and a farmer's son and was born with magical wonder flickering in her DNA and rationality knit into her bones. All her life she's been torn between the two. But now that she's been betrayed by both love and the mother she once idolized, her rational side is winning. So when her best friend from childhood proposes that they give up on romance and marry each other, Phronsie agrees. Who better to spend your life with than your best friend? Maybe the connection they already have is love. Maybe there's no falling to be done. But immediately after they announce their engagement, she encounters someone who makes a very ...charming and compelling argument for revisiting romance. While her even-keeled stepmother argues for the safety that comes with her new engagement and her mother relays messages from the universe to hold out for true love, Phronsie must look to her own heart to find the answers that have been there all along."--goodreads.com.

Review by Booklist Review

Growing up in Framingham, New Hampshire, childhood best friends Phronsie and Judd didn't plan it but found themselves not only living in New York City but also in the very same apartment building. Phronsie is doing well at a small publishing house but having no luck dating, so when Judd suggests they settle for friendship over love and get married, she's hesitant but agrees. Before they even start sharing the news, however, Phronsie gets interested in a new guy at work. Yikes! Nearly until the end, readers may have the impression that they're enjoying a typical rom-com, but unexpected decisions open the way for a welcome twist we didn't even know we needed. Most characters are connected by family ties and watching their relationships change over time, reflecting growth from life experiences, creates the aura of a neighborly chat, while best-selling Dawson (A Happy Catastrophe, 2020) makes Phronsie's inner turmoil the novel's primary focus. Dawson's fans will recognize her signature elements: magical abilities, strong character development, and a satisfying ending. The provided book club questions will enhance any discussion.
