Loving Edie How a dog afraid of everything taught me to be brave

Meredith May

Book - 2022

"Edie is an unusually anxious dog. She cowers around most people and the slightest noise sends her into a frenzy. Edie's fears become so intense that May can't leave the house. Is this normal puppy behavior or something more? May grows determined to fix Edie, but what will she do if Edie can't be fixed? In this poignant and heartfelt memoir, May shares her unforgettable journey with Edie, and the lessons about selflessness and unconditional love that she learns along the way. From treating Edie with CBD gummies to visiting a dog medium, May shows just how far she is willing to go to save her dog. But maybe Edie is secretly the one doing the saving, if May will only open her heart."--Jacket

Review by Booklist Review

San Francisco journalist May's previous golden retriever, Stella, was a perfect dog, so it took only a little convincing for her wife, Jenn, to agree to adopt a golden puppy. Edie was a sweet, rambunctious ball of fur, but it soon became clear that she was no Stella. She failed her first puppy play date; when out walking, she froze at the sound of cars, bicycles, children, and basically anything that moved; and she bolted into traffic when really frightened. With the help of a patient puppy school instructor, May and Jenn learned protocols to deal with Edie's extreme anxiety, but nothing--not a relaxation protocol, not CBD or Prozac, not a pet psychic--seemed to fix her. May is impatient, and even Jenn, normally even-keeled, is desperate for progress. Slowly, May realizes that the hope of Edie ever overcoming her anxiety is an impossible one and that she must learn to accept Edie as she is. A change of scenery drives the lesson home in this heartfelt tale of how one incredibly anxious puppy completed a family.
