They don't want her there Fighting sexual and racial harassment in the American university

Carolyn Chalmers, 1946-

Book - 2022

"Decades before the #MeToo movement, Chinese American professor Jean Jew M.D. brought a lawsuit against the University of Iowa, alleging a sexually hostile work environment within the university's College of Medicine. As Jew gained accolades and advanced through the ranks at Iowa, she was met with increasingly vicious attacks on her character by her White male colleagues. After years of demoralizing sexual, racial, and ethnic discrimination, finding herself without any higher-up departmental support, and noting her professional progression beginning to suffer by the hands of hate, Jean Jew decided to fight back. Carolyn Chalmers was her lawyer. This book tells the inside story of pioneering litigation unfolding during the eight ye...ars of a university investigation, a watershed federal trial, and a state court jury trial. They Don't Want Her There is a brilliant, original work of legal history that is deeply personal and shows today's professional women just how recently some of our rights have been won--and at what cost."

Equal parts important and infuriating, this book tells the story of Chinese American professor Jean Jew, M.D., and her fight against the sexual, racial, and ethnic harassment she experienced from male colleagues at the University of Iowa alongside Carolyn Chalmers, the lawyer who championed Jew through eight years of litigation. Written by Chalmers, an experienced employment litigator, this memoir details the escalating sexual harassment and anti-Chinese abuse Jew suffered through, the effects on her career and well-being, the dismissal of her concerns from administration, and her decision to fight back. It equally highlights Chalmers's pioneering approach in the courtroom at a time when sexual harassment laws were still in their infancy. Using original case files and attorney notes to recreate scenes and dialogue, along with photographs and newspaper clippings, Chalmers's conversational writing style draws the reader into their world, into their frustrations, and eventually their triumph. They Don't Want Her There is an excellent read that provides insight into two women's struggle against an institutional powerhouse in a story that still feels unfortunately relevant today. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers through faculty; professionals. --April Sheppard, Arkansas State University
