The migration series no. 58

Jacob Lawrence, 1917-2000

Art work - 1993

"With arms stretched high, these three girls reach to write numbers on a large, clean chalkboard. Their bright dresses and modern classroom suggest that these students enjoy a standard of living that allows them focus on school work. Lawrence’s picture of a childhood education in the North contrasts sharply with his depiction of underage labor in the South in panel 24, in which bare-chested children work in cotton fields under the sun"--www.moma.org.
