White (Green on Green, 2020) offers here another rhymed picture book focusing on the natural world. "In the garden, flowers grow. / Hues of color, row on row. / Who's that buzzing? Listen. See. / A fuzzy, YELLOW busy . . . / Bee." Surveying three habitats (a garden, a meadow, and a brook), she poses simple queries whose answers complete a rhyming couplet. Questions appear on the right sides of most spreads; a page turn reveals the answer on the left side of the following spread. Schimler-Safford's mixed-media artwork boasts bright, sunny colors, varied textures, and effective layering that helps to camouflage creatures on the question pages. And while the depicted animals are effectively hidden when first described, these spreads never appear cluttered. The art is also careful to depict details about these animals not cited in the main text but mentioned in the author's appended note. A great summer read-aloud and prelude to a walk; allow time to peruse the art for the hidden creatures.
