Review by Library Journal Review

As homemade goods become increasingly sought after, more devotees are eager to expand their skills. Making and using natural dyes produces beautiful results. In her first book, Vejar, a professional dyer and owner of A Verb for Keeping Warm, a California-based yarn store and dye studio, pulls from her considerable expertise. Natural materials and their properties are clearly explained, followed by types of fibers that are best used. The basics of dyeing with natural dyes are covered through step-by-step instructions, lists of needed materials, and site preparation. Projects include knitted hats, scarves, sweaters, socks, and sewn clothing, pillows, quilts, and more. Beautiful illustrations are well placed, but the dyeing process is complex, so this isn't for simple weekend crafting. VERDICT Vejar's lovely book is very sophisticated and detailed, and crafters who are willing to commit will find what they need here. Similar to Rebecca Burgess's Harvesting Color, which also focuses on harvesting and using natural dye sources. © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
