PreS-Gr 2--In this third book in the "Really Bird" series, Really Bird and his friends Cat and Pup pretend to go to outer space. Really Bird prepares his friends for the trip by going through a checklist that includes making sure they have their helmets on, assigning their seats on the spaceship, and ensuring their seat belts are correctly fastened. When they finally get to space, it is "one small step for Pup. And one giant leap for Cat! And…A wish come true for Really Bird!" This story shows Really Bird and his friends being enthusiastic, excitable, and passionate in their adventures. The friends learn how to be patient and encourage each other; whenever Pup and Cat are not sure about what is happening, Really Bird talks them through exactly what he, the pilot, is doing--this helps to calm and ease their fears. The importance of working together is demonstrated to children as Really Bird and his friends collaborate and role play in pushing the pretend power button or helping buckle up each other's seat belts before taking off. Back matter includes a list of questions that parents and educators can ask young readers. All of the "Really Bird" stories touch on the themes of teamwork and compassion, and this title is a great addition to the series. VERDICT Little ones will love the pretend play of this story. Great for any children's library collection.--Annmarie Braithwaite
