Mrs noah's song

Jackie Morris

Book - 2022

"A beautiful new picture book in the bestselling Mrs Noah series, in which Mrs Noah brings song back into the world and shows the children how to listen - and sing. Mrs Noah sang to the children when they woke in the morning. She sang as she worked in the garden, growing flowers and growing food. She sang lullabies at night to help the children sail into sleep. "If you want to learn to sing," Mrs Noah tells the children, "first you must learn how to listen. Close your eyes, tight shut, and open your ears, wide, wide." At first the children hear only silence, then birds call, bees hum - and they hear the song of the garden. That night, Mr Noah makes a surprise present for the family so that they can all sleep togethe...r out in the garden. Then, at dawn there's the best surprise of all - the magical sound of the dawn chorus, led by the phoenix. On a joyful new day, Mrs Noah's birthday, there is birdsong in the garden and a future full of shared song for Mr and Mrs Noah and the children"--Publisher's description.

Review by Booklist Review

In their third book about Mrs. Noah, inspired by the biblical tale, Morris and Mayhew deliver a whimsical book celebrating the joy of finding music in our surroundings. Mrs. Noah loves to sing all the time and is keen to finding musical notes everywhere. She teaches her children that listening is required to learn to sing the way her mother, whom she misses, taught her. They explore nature's sounds during the day and decide to sleep outdoors for a night. At dawn, they are awakened by the phoenix, witnessing firsthand the chorus that unfolds with the rising of the sun. Morris' lyrical text is well matched by Mayhew's expressive and textured collage illustrations, which meaningfully incorporate pieces of sheet music, particularly around beatific Mrs. Noah. The story concludes with Mrs. Noah's birthday, which her family thoughtfully celebrates with even more music, when Mr. Noah gives her a guitar as a gift. A sweet story of family, perfect for bedtime.

Review by Kirkus Book Review

A matriarch shares the wonder of song. Mrs Noah sings constantly while she sews, gardens, and wakes her children for a new day. The children ask where she learned to sing, and she looks sad as she replies, "Far away and long ago." When pressed by her youngest child, she elaborates that her mother and her grandmother were her teachers and that sadness can be good when reminiscing about people you love. In the verdant garden, Mrs Noah tells her children to close their eyes and listen. After a moment, the children hear birds singing, bees humming, and a breeze whispering in the leaves. They are amazed, but Mrs Noah says the garden sings best in the morning, just as the sun rises. Mr Noah sews a huge hammock so the family can sleep in the garden that night to be ready for the dawn. In Morris and Mayhew's latest adaptation of the Judeo-Christian story of Noah and the ark, life after the flood is once more enchanted and interwoven with nature. The imagery-rich text and lavish collage and mixed-media art create a harmonious composition that touches on themes of oral storytelling, generational art, and rebirth ("Does this happen every morning?" one child asks, to which Mrs Noah replies, "Every morning. A wild song to raise the sun"). The children have varying skin tones inherited from dark-skinned Mrs Noah and pale Mr Noah. (This book was reviewed digitally.) Dulcet elegance.
