Book - 2023

"Mariners Island is barely ten miles long, but when Ivy, Ariana and Cam were teenagers, it was their whole world. Beyond the pristine beaches and iconic lighthouse lies the beautiful old library that belongs to Ivy's family. While that bound Ivy to the island as an adult, Ariana could not leave Mariners behind fast enough. The town holds too many memories. Not only her unrequited feelings for Cam, but the tragedy that left a scar on the community. When a young girl went missing, a teenaged Cam was unthinkably the prime suspect. Ariana and Ivy knew he couldn't have hurt anyone, and they promised to protect him--even if it meant lying on his behalf. Now, twenty years later, Ariana returns to Mariners just as new evidence emerge...s on the case, calling into question everything the three friends thought they knew--and everyone they thought they could trust. What really happened that night? Over the course of one eventful summer, Ariana, Ivy and Cam will learn the truth--about their pasts, their futures and the ties that still bind them as closely as the pages of a book."--Dust jacket flap.

Ivy, Cam, and Ariana have been friends for their whole lives. The three of them grew up on idyllic Mariners Island, which drew large numbers of tourists during the summer, but one summer stood out from the rest. Sixteen-year-old Cam was accused of kidnapping Emily, a twelve-year-old girl who was visiting the island that summer. Cam narrowly escaped the accusation when Ivy and Ariana lied and provided him with a much-needed alibi. Flash forward, Ivy and Cam still live on the island. Ivy runs her family-owned library while Cam owns a successful architecture company. Ariana's unrequited love for Cam and the lie she told to help him made her leave the island as soon as she could, until new information about Emily emerged. The three friends reunite and Ivy and Ariana grapple with the decision to stand by Cam and their lie or to finally come clean. Novak once again demonstrates her unique skills of creating well-crafted characters and an enticing plot including themes of love, redemption, and friendship. Anita Hughes readers will enjoy this novel.
