The opportunist A novel

Elyse Friedman, 1963-

Book - 2022

"A deliciously sly, compulsively readable tale about greed, power and the world's most devious family, for fans of The Nest and Succession. When Alana Shropshire's seventy-six-year-old father, Ed, starts dating Kelly, a saucy twenty-eight-year-old, a flurry of messages arrives from Alana's brothers, urging her to help "protect Dad" from the young interloper. Alana knows that what Teddy and Martin really want to protect is their father's fortune, and she tells them she couldn't care less about the May-December romance. Long estranged from her privileged family, Alana has no stake in the game, and as a hardworking single mom, she has more important things to worry about. But when Ed and Kelly's wed...ding is announced, Teddy and Martin kick into hyperdrive, and eventually persuade Alana to fly to their father's 900-acre West Coast island retreat to perform one tiny task in their plan to lure the "gold digger" away from their father. Kelly, however, proves a lot wilier than expected, and Alana becomes entangled in an increasingly dangerous scheme full of secrets and surprises. Will she be able to escape her brothers' elaborate web of deceit? Just how far will her siblings go to retain control? Smart, entertaining and brimming with shocking twists and turns, The Opportunist is both a thrill-ride of a story and a razor-sharp view of how women and men hold power in the world."--

Alana Shropshire grew up in the lap of luxury, but she gave it up to escape her toxic family. Now she lives a modest life in Toronto, working at a nonprofit and caring for her daughter, who has muscular dystrophy. When Alana's father announces his upcoming wedding, she must return to the world she left in Vancouver. The bride is Kelly McNutt, Ed Shropshire's twenty-eight-year-old nurse, who is clearly out to steal his estate. Alana's brothers, who work for their father's company and are rolling in cash, offer her a reward if she can get Kelly to disappear. It's enough to replace Alana's ailing car, so she agrees to try. Kelly isn't going away so easily, though. As secrets pile up, Alana is dragged into a web of deceit. This perfectly paced novel mixes intrigue, drama, and mystery. Each reveal is timed to keep readers glued to the pages, and no character is safe from the others' lies. With so many appealing factors, this book will be popular with a wide range of patrons.

Struggling single-mom Alana Shropshire assiduously avoids her family until her grasping brothers offer to pay her to prevent a 29-year-old from marrying their wealthy septuagenarian father. That should take just one little trick, but things spin rapidly out of control. From award-winning Canadian author Friedman; with a 75,000-copy first printing.
