For designer Rohr, cross-stitch is self-care: "the repetitive, meditative motions of stitching just made me feel good," she explains in her introduction. The 40 patterns presented here follow that self-care theme, from the sincere ("You Are Enough") to the snarky ("Interrupt My Bath At Your Own Risk"). The book begins with an explanation of supplies, how to read a pattern, where to start stitching: everything the novice needs to get started. Patterns range in difficulty from "newbie" to advanced, with most falling in the beginner or intermediate category. The style is in the subversive cross-stitch mold: bold lettering surrounded by borders made of flowers or patterns or, in one case, a set of vibrators ("Self-Love Is Self-Care"). Most of the patterns fit on one page, with a photo of a finished, framed example on the opposite, though a few of the advanced patterns take up several pages. More conservative crafters may be put off by occasionally salty language ("Fuck 'Should'"), but Rohr's bright patterns and bold sentiments will find a home in every craft collection.
