"From a young age, Althalia knew she would someday be the last of her kind--a bruja, tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history. Never alone, Althalia works in a paranormal museum with her friends, a real-life Chupacabra and a were-coyote, while living with and caring for her beloved abuela. Through these powerful connections, her skills and knowledge grow. But the prejudice her people have always faced continues, and after a seemingly random encounter with a priest, Althalia feels the weight of hundreds of years of religious oppression coming down upon her and her abuela. She must realize her destiny and grow into it quickly if she is to prevent the church from achieving its ultimate g...oal--destroying the last bruja"--

Althalia is one of the last brujas being pursued by the church, just as her ancestors were centuries ago. Her abuela has tried to prepare her for the hardships she would face by helping her develop her powers, but though Althalia seems very promising, those close to her know that she still has much to learn to properly hone her abilities. After a confrontation with a priest who knows that she and her grandmother are brujas, Althalia becomes aware of just how much danger she is in. The church will stop at nothing to rid the world of brujas, and Althalia must live up to her grandmother's expectations if she stands any chance of stopping the church. A tense demon exorcism in the opening pages plunges readers directly into the witchy action, and the colorful illustrations flawlessly capture the thrills and magic of the story. This whimsical series opener combines crowd-favorite genre staples with meaningfully integrated Latine culture and representation.
