Review by Library Journal Review

Ganderton's (Embroidery for Beginners) volume includes an extensive amount of information about embroidery. This well-organized book begins with a brief history of the art through current trends today. It covers the different types of threads, needles, and fabric needed for various embroidery projects. The "Gallery of Stitches" section exhibits photos of each finished stitch with the name and page number of where the instructions can be found. The steps for these stitches are divided into four categories by type: "Lines and Borders," "Filling Stitches," "Openwork," and "Needlepoint." Each section begins with a brief introduction that contextualizes it in the larger world of embroidery and in different historical and cultural traditions. Readers will also gain knowledge about the potential uses and adaptations for each type of stitch. VERDICT Beginners can use this book to learn and practice new stitches, while advanced stitchers may find inspiration for their own pattern designs. Recommended for most public libraries.--Caitlin Loving
