Reader be warned: Stewart's memoir is a guaranteed tearjerker. The California-based veterinarian tells his life story, beginning in his teen years, through ups and downs: divorce, a near-suicide attempt (one in six vets consider suicide), financial overextensions, health issues. Through it all, the animals prevail, whether it's Stewart's Doberman, Baron, or Solly the pug, who belongs to Jennifer, a person experiencing homelessness. On Skid Row, Stewart tends to the pets of those who land there. His work in shelters informs discussion of animals designated to be euthanized and how he saves those he can. Among the most emotional stories sure to touch readers in some way are those of Don and his blind dachshund, Loca, and of the ways animals can cure PTSD and other mental health issues. Through it all, Stewart even finds a bit of humor: "Animals come easily to me, but I'm always stepping in it when it comes to humans." With his moving story, Stewart, who founded the charity Project Street Vet, just might have his animal-lover readers reaching for their wallets too.
