Review by Booklist Review

Like puberty, menopause is a universal experience for all women. But how they experience it varies a great deal. Hormonal changes can cause hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and thinning hair, which are among the reasons patients visit Hirsch, clinical program director of the Menopause and Midlife Clinic at Brigham & Women's Hospital. Some women tell her, "I feel like someone has taken over my body." Based on tracking more than 1,000 patients in her clinical practice, Hirsch has identified six menopause types, including premature menopause (before age 40) and sudden menopause (typically from chemotherapy or surgery). She talks about options like hormone therapy, which she notes is "complicated" and "often polarizing." (Women taking estrogen and progestin showed an increased risk for breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, and blood clots.) Hirsch dispels myths; no, men do not go through menopause. She offers advice, some of which is generic (for hot flashes, avoid common triggers like spicy foods and alcohol), and some of which is more fun ("motion is lotion"). In all, this is a useful, practical, and reliable source rooted in research.
