Review by School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1--Cat, Dog, and Pig have a very deep problem--deep snow, that is! They all need to figure out how to get through the cold, wet stuff. Cat and Dog have the same ideas, but different methods of execution. Pig, however, takes advantage of an unexpected opportunity and slides through the snow and away from Cat and Dog's snowball fight! This beginning reader is best suited for kids just starting their reading journey. Familiar animals and activities help solidify sight words through repetitive sounds such as snow, mow, and blow. Well-balanced illustrations offer fairly successful contextual support, although in one picture of Cat, his face looks angry, when he's supposed to be blowing instead. Eye-catching colors and expressive line drawings create an engaging setting. The illustrations are also approachable for young artists who may want to try their own hand at drawing Cat, Dog, and Pig. VERDICT A first purchase for beginning reader collections. Recommend this title to brand-new readers and their caretakers.--Kate Davis
