Look, it's Roar Roar Lion

Camilla Reid

Book - 2023

"Preschoolers will adore Clare Youngs' friendly animals, with their high-contrast collage artwork, decorative foil highlights, and signature animal noises ... and there's a tiny creature hidden behind a tuggable felt flap on each spread, too! In this book, you'll meet Clip Clop Zebra, Ooo Ooo Monkey, Munch Munch Hippo, and Roar Roar Lion himself. With a final "recap" page of animal noises, and the question, "But what noise do YOU make?", little readers will enjoy lifting the last flap and saying "hello" to themselves in the surprise mirror! Visually gorgeous and with a genuinely engaging hide-and-seek narrative, this is the launch of a stunning new series from the author behind the bestsell...ing children's series Felt Flaps, Pip and Posy, Bizzy Bear, and Peekaboo." -- Amazon.

Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-K--Listeners are invited to gaze at Clip Clop Zebra and then find the spotted ladybug on the same page. That means lifting the flap, and the ladybug appears. So, it goes for Ooo Ooo Monkey with shiny snail, Munch Munch Hippo with hoppy frog, and Roar Roar Lion with a pretty butterfly. The last page recaps what the animals say and asks, "What do you say?" with a mirror under the flap. No, a zebra doesn't actually say "clip, clop" as much as its hooves make that sound, but that's a minor quibble. The collagelike illustrations are colorful and use shiny foil for eye-catching interest. There is plenty of white space, so the animals and flaps don't fight visual clutter. VERDICT This multisensory board book with flaps, foil, and a mirror at the end has appeal for preschoolers; purchase as needed.--Catherine Callegari
