Review by Booklist Review

The newest addition to the pantheon of America's Test Kitchen titles is their first book focused on cooking for crowds and entertaining. Fans of the ATK TV show will appreciate getting to know familiar personalities and many behind-the-scenes contributors as these menu makers share their favorite cookbooks, ingredients, and secret weapons in introductory profiles and menu introductions. Planning particulars follow, with tons of hints and tips that refer to recipes with page numbers, and a recipe mix-and-match chart will help home cooks create a unique menu. Each menu encompasses three to five recipes, from starters to desserts and even a few drinks, and includes strategies to stay organized and prep ahead. Themes run the gamut from casual to hearty fare and cover a diversity of cuisines and flavors, including vegetarian. Scrumptious food layouts are accompanied by step-by-step photos for trickier aspects. This comprehensive guide is packed with delicious recipes and fun menu ideas, but its unique draw is the personal narrative and knowledge-sharing of each ATK chef, which will make this a hit.

Review by Library Journal Review

America's Test Kitchen brings out ideas for the gathering in this collection of themed parties from multiple styles and places. From Maine to Viet-Cajun, Midwestern brunch to Icelandic dinners, Anatolian spreads to a British picnic, are all laid out in great detail. Timetables, shopping lists, hints, and tips are combined with the recipes for cocktails, appetizers, main dishes, and sometimes desserts that all follow the theme. The "Nacho Average Barbecue" has six recipes, the "Vegetarian Dumpling Party" four, each presented in great detail with pictures and explanations that are suitable for beginners to the kitchen, but not insulting to semi-pros. The introduction is warm and encouraging, but the chapter titled "Practicalities" may be the single most useful thing; it teaches a host how to plan a party. VERDICT This is as pretty to look at as it is useful to read.--Danise Hoover
