Review by Booklist Review

In celebration of the Walt Disney Company's centennial, Disney historian Fanning and artist and Disney legend Deja have put together a special, image-heavy book that briefly recaps the company's origins and history. The chapters are organized by decade. Each starts with an overview of that era's defining movies, and further tidbits about specific films appear throughout the rest of the chapter. Deja, who worked on such projects as Beauty and the Beast and Lilo & Stitch, provides insider stories about how the animators designed these beloved characters, focusing on how their shapes reflect their personalities or sometimes a loved one's mannerisms. What separates this book from other Disney history tomes, however, is that it also teaches readers how to draw 100 different Disney characters, starting with Mickey Mouse, naturally, and ending with Mei Lee (the red panda version) from Turning Red. Each tutorial starts with basic shapes and gradually moves on to more complex details in six or so steps. This one-of-a-kind, interactive format makes this book a must-have.
