This historical adventure takes readers back to the time of pirates on the high seas and the prejudices lingering after the Salem witch trials. Maria Brown, daughter of an affluent father, has never followed societal norms. She's too headstrong and restless to quietly obey her parents' wishes that she marry the most fitting, wealthy man. By chance she meets Sam Bellamy, a young, orphaned sailor who is instantly drawn to her fearlessness and determination. They develop an unbreakable bond that will have to see them through Sam's leaving on a treasure adventure, promising to return a wealthy man. After she hears that Sam has turned pirate on the seas, Maria's life gets turned upside down. Banished as a witch, she learns to survive on her own, all the while waiting and hoping for Sam to return for her. Rueckert works in themes of love and sisterhood and brotherhood into her debut. The will to live through perilous struggles and become resilient is strong in these characters. This journey into tumultuous history will keep readers engaged and committed until the very end.
