Review by Booklist Review

In Oxford, vicious attacks on young girls ignite questions about DI Adam Fawley's 1998 investigation of the "Roadside Rapist," Gavin Parrie. When Faith Appleford is snatched and brutally beaten, Fawley's team, last seen in No Way Out (2019), first suspects a hate-motivated crime after learning that Faith is a trans woman. Then, high-school student Sasha Blake disappears from a bus stop and is later found dead. Both attacks have striking similarities to Parrie's crimes: the hooded, bound, and beaten victims bear strange traces of plaster dust. Parrie was put away for life in 1999, but he's currently up for a parole review, and his family is making noise about a wrongful conviction. The conflict of interest forces Fawley to hand the investigation, and his team, over to DI Ruth Gallagher. Certain that an airtight investigation is the only way to prove Fawley's integrity, the team turns over all rocks, exposing gut-wrenching twists and human truths. Hunter's fourth outing with Fawley is a well-written, richly detailed fly-on-the-wall procedural; highly recommended.
