Review by School Library Journal Review

Toddler-PreS--A bilingual board book about shapes. Benard and Cheng have connected various shapes to the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. A circle "drum beats rhythmically," children balance oval eggs at noon, triangle zongzi are thrown in the river, and square papers are used to create herb-filled good luck satchels. Text in Chinese script with Pinyin directly underneath and English translation at the bottom of the pages make the title accessible for everyone, regardless of familiarity with Chinese. Benard's homemade paper-cut art creates colorful illustrations that bring a one-of-a-kind vibe to the title. As a bonus, instructions for making good luck satchels are included at the end. This activity is designed for children who are able to use scissors. Ideal for English as a second language learners, those endeavoring to learn to read Chinese, and caregivers who want to share Chinese with their children. VERDICT A solid purchase for board book shelves.--Sarah Sieg
