All the river Ganga wants is to be free from the arrogance of mortals. Even when she herself is cursed to be human, she hopes to remain apart from the people around her, separate from the kingdoms they build and the forests they tear down. But her youngest son, Prince Devavrata, better known as Bhishma, will continue to bind her to the mortal world long after she gains her freedom. As the kingdom descends into engulfing war, Ganga's love for her son and her own sense of justice mean that she'll get involved--not as a side story but as a crucial piece in the chess game of this infamous clash. In her retelling of the Mahabharata, Patel (Kaikeyi, 2022) has once again narrowed her version of a famous epic onto one compelling, female protagonist. Fans of the original as well as fans of mythological fantasy and retellings will enjoy Ganga's fierce independence and well-told journey as well as the twists and turns that spell out Bhishma's destiny in this complex story.
