The author of The One (2018), The Passengers (2019), and The Marriage Act (2023) delivers another first-class thriller. Connie's mother, Gwen, suffers from dementia. Connie visits her every day, but can't keep up with the things that need doing around the house. It is a relief, then, when a local charity arranges for a handyman, Paul, to take care of some of the chores, free of charge . . . until Connie begins to notice that Paul and Gwen are becoming uncomfortably close, and that she, Connie, is being shut out of Gwen's life. Things spiral when Paul finds himself without a place to live and moves in with Gwen, prompting Connie to go to increasingly desperate measures to help her mother see the bad intentions Connie senses lingering under his facade of kindness. Is Paul a real threat, or is Connie just paranoid? Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they'll want more.
