The author of She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be (2020), A Caller's Game (2021), and the remarkable 4MK trilogy demonstrates once again just how fine of a writer he is. In Barker's new novel, Abby and Brendan Hollander decide to inject a little spontaneity into their marriage by downloading Sugar & Spice, a popular new app that awards points for completing specific tasks designed, or so the app's creators claim, to bring couples closer together. By the time Abby and Brendan realize the dark truth about the app, it may be too late for them to extricate themselves from its grasp. This is a beautifully constructed thriller, full of suspense and clever twists (including one Big Giant Surprise that's extremely effective), and readers who like their fiction to be dark and frightening should really enjoy this one. Fans of the author's previous books will also note the same precision in character design and the same natural, realistic dialogue. A definite winner.
