Ages 5-8. A family of mice sails down the river from Brambly Hedge to the sea in order to buy salt for their community upstream. They stay at the seaside for a few days with a friendly family of mice, then load their boat and set sail for home. The text may be rather long and the adventures rather mild, but fans of the British Brambly Hedge series will relish this agreeable tale and, particularly, the ink-and-watercolor illustrations, which create a detailed, secondary world in miniature, in the tradition of Beatrix Potter. Myriad imaginative visual details fill the illustrations, offering pictures to read silently while the words are read aloud. ~--Carolyn Phelan

Designed with an appropriately small trim size, the four books relate the adventures of the anthropomorphic mice of Brambly Hedge. The diminutive illustrations of their elaborate tree-trunk homes and the surrounding hedgerow are filled with details that encourage the reader to peer closely at the pages. The cozy stories all take place in fall or winter. From HORN BOOK Fall 2000, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
