Review by Booklist Review

Three elements define business books written by highly successful women sharing work secrets: ensuring that other, younger professionals learn from the author's mistakes and victories; leaving a legacy of thought leadership; and simply telling the author's story. "Queen of Cable" Hammer, vice chair of NBCUniversal, excels especially in this last element. Basing her book around "15 lies" is a more contemporary version of demystifying the lessons we've long been taught. For instance, the importance of both inside and outside appearances for women professionals has long been an accepted fact, as has the idea that "great things come to those who act." Hammer's material takes on individuality in her anecdotes and occasional sidebars. Readers will learn about her career and its successes and learning opportunities along with tales of family, friends--and mistakes. At-a-glance lessons take the form of, for instance, reframing failure, a list of to-dos for brainstorming, and the subtleties of apologizing.
