Where is anybody?

Simon R. Green, 1955-

Book - 2024

Gideon Sable specializes in stealing the kind of things that can't usually be stolen. But these days the legendary master thief is officially retired from the caper game. Now, instead of pulling off elaborate heists with his crew of supernatural specialists, he runs a magical shop in the heart of London with his partner Annie Anybody. Still, he can't resist occasionally going out in the night to steal things when Annie's not looking. For old times' sake - and for the joy of the con. But after one of his late-night illicit jaunts, Gideon returns to the shop to find that while he's been stealing, someone else has been hard at work . . . stealing from him. 'I have taken Annie Anybody,' reads the note on the c...ountertop. 'If you ever want to see her again, you must find and steal Time's Arrow. You have forty-eight hours.' Stealing the legendary Arrow isn't a challenge; it's certain death. But Gideon will stop at nothing to save Annie from their unknown enemy - with or without the help of his talented, terrifying former crew . . .

Review by Booklist Review

The fifth Gideon Sable thriller is--and this should come as no surprise to the author's fans--just terrific. Sable is, of course, the master thief who steals the unstealable: items of a supernatural or weird nature. But the story in this book is clever: in a reversal of the usual situation, Gideon is the victim of a theft. Someone has kidnapped Annie Anybody, his partner, and if he wants to see her again, he'll have to commit the most audacious heist he's ever pulled off. Green specializes in urban fantasy (he wrote the Secret Histories series, which began with The Man with the Golden Torc, 2007), and he has a real knack for world building. The world in which Gideon lives isn't quite the same as the one in which the reader lives, but it is just as solid and tangible. These books are so much fun: great characters, well-plotted, and written in a lively style that pulls us in. Green is a master at his craft--read this book and you'll see why.
