Molière's Tartuffe staged by Macha Makeïeff
Streaming video - 2022
Orgon, father of a bourgeois family and a good man, falls in love with a poor and devout young man he met in church. He invites him to his home and gradually integrates him completely into his family. A clever manipulator, Tartuffe will bring about a new moral order in the household. After seducing the father, he attacks the mother and the daughter, and then sets his sights on the son’s inheritance. Socially, he does not belong to this world and yet he will shake it… He is a fraud, a sham. “Fantasy, desire, predation, consent, infamy, vertigo. In this great comedy, what is being played out and where is the truth? In front of the spectacle of this exasperated family that loses its footing, this device of revealed desire/denied pleasure..., in the end, it is the audience that is unmasked in its voyeurism and its troubled enjoyment”, says Macha Makeïeff, who seizes the timeless masterpiece denouncing the hypocrisy of society by Molière, and transposes it to the 1960s.
