Review by Booklist Review

It's owl-observation time! After a personal owl anecdote, the author dives into some initial notes, including the fact that at least 250 species make their homes in various habitats across the world. Only 19 species live in Canada and the U.S., and while the book ostensibly focuses on those North American varieties, there are plenty of references to owls elsewhere. There's a crash course in their incredible anatomy, communication, child-rearing, and varied diet, including an amazing photo of an owl dramatically ejecting a pellet. After getting to know the birds, there is a discussion of current environmental concerns affecting so much of their population (deforestation, rodent poison, car collisions) and what people are doing to help. The impressively comprehensive text is chatty and entertaining, while marginalia offer colorful asides that spotlight specific species and fun facts. Spectacular photos make each spread a visual treat, and a bright palette and striking graphics will keep readers' attention. This illuminating avian introduction is sure to make an owl ally out of anyone.
