The axeman's carnival A novel

Catherine Chidgey

Book - 2024

"Tama is just a helpless chick when he is rescued by Marnie, and this is where his story might have ended. "If it keeps me awake," says Marnie's husband Rob, a farmer, "I'll have to wring its neck." But with Tama come new possibilities for the couple's future. Tama can speak, and his fame is growing. Outside, in the pines, his father warns him of the wickedness wrought by humans. Indoors, Marnie confides in him about her violent marriage. The more Tama sees, the more the animal and the human worlds--and all the precarity, darkness and hope within them--bleed into one another. Like a stock truck filled with live cargo, the story moves inexorably towards its dramatic conclusion: the annual Axeman's... Carnival. Part trickster, part surrogate child, part witness, Tama the magpie is the star of this story. Though what he says aloud to humans is often nonsensical (and hilarious), the tale he tells us weaves a disturbingly human sense. The Axeman's Carnival is Catherine Chidgey at her finest--comic, profound, poetic and true." --

Up in the high country of New Zealand, a magpie is born. Shortly after his birth, he is rescued by a human named Marnie. Marnie feeds him and watches over him, and soon the magpie, named Tamagotchi (Tama for short), begins to speak human words. At first, Marnie's husband, Rob, does not want Tama around, but when Tama becomes an internet sensation and a potential way to make money, he relents. Marnie and Rob's marriage, strained by money troubles and Rob's drinking, begins to calm down, but the pressure of the Axeman's Carnival at the end of the season drives Rob toward drink, and he, Tama, and Marnie collide forcefully, resulting in consequences for the family that will leave the entire community shaken. Chidgey (Pet, 2023) is back with another tragic, gorgeous, and top-notch novel. The Axeman's Carnival is a stunning and captivating story about the pressures of farming life and the meaning of family, and Chidgey is at the absolute top of her game.

When tiny helpless magpie chick Tama is rescued and taken in by New Zealand woman Marnie, he learns about people while remembering his magpie family in the trees above. Marnie's husband, Rob, a farmer and competitive woodchopper, is a violent man at home ("This is how houses work," Tama learns) and is fiercely determined to win his 10th consecutive Golden Axe (and the accompanying prize money) at the upcoming Axeman's Carnival. But Marnie's attentions are on Tama as he displays his intelligence, speaking human words and phrases he has picked up at home and performing for Marnie's effusive love. Tama, who says "meow" as he hops through the house's cat door, is before long a social-media darling with an agent, a livestream, and merch. Tensions between Marnie and Rob increase as Tama's fame skyrockets, the Axeman's Carnival approaches, and the farm struggles, leading to a gripping dénouement. VERDICT To the oft-invoked online debate of man vs. bear, Tama offers a new question: man vs. bird. The magpie narrator offers more nuance and understanding to human relations than do most people. Chidgey (Pet) is a skilled storyteller and doesn't stop surprising with this gorgeously haunting work. Endlessly faceted and highly recommended for book clubs.--Julie Kane
