K-Gr 3--From the author of Perfectly Norman comes a book about a day that does not turn out as planned. It's Bea's birthday, and she has been looking forward to it. Her grandparents and cousins are coming to celebrate with her. But the day before, a huge snowstorm comes, and no one can make it to her house. Bea is shattered by disappointment, but her family helps her turn the day around with a snow ride and perfect cake. Bright illustrations capture the events of the story and vividly show Bea's feelings. When things go wrong, the art style makes it look as if the pages have cracked and then slowly mended as Bea's outlook improves. Much like Kobi Yamada's What Do You Do with a Problem?, this book helps children develop strategies for coping with disappointment. The back matter provides practical ways for readers to lift their spirits when things don't go as planned. VERDICT A great SEL addition to all collections, especially where the other books in the series circulate well.--Heidi Dechief
