Book - 2024

Esma is excited to be visiting family in Morocco. She can't wait to explore the souk - a giant market full of incredible acrobats, delicious-smelling spices, and cheeky monkeys. But while Esma is being charmed by swaying snakes, she loses track of Mama and Auntie Fatima. Esma is lost! With the help of the souk's lively inhabitants Esma makes a daring plan to find her mama. Will she be brave enough to step up and stand out? Inspired by their own families, authors Lisa Boersen and Hasna Elbaamrani offer a child's viewpoint of the bustling Marrakesh souk and its characters. Annelies Vandenbosch's illustrations are packed with brilliant details, bright colors and real warmth.

Review by Kirkus Book Review

Separated from Mama in a bustling souk, young Esma Farouk enlists the help of some unlikely characters. Esma travels with Mama, Papa, and three siblings to see extended family in Morocco. Every time they visit, their suitcases are packed with gifts to give--and, on their way home, with presents they've received from relatives. Sporting a pair of brand-new green slippers, Esma heads to the souk with Mama and Auntie Fatima. Captivated by the vibrant sights, sounds, and smells, Esma is distracted watching snakes slithering and dancing to music. Oh no. Esma is lost! Distressed, the child cries out for Mama. A series of friendly locals, including water carriers, a man with a monkey, and a group of acrobats, come to Esma's aid, suggesting that the youngster visit a fortuneteller, who just might have some answers. The souk bursts to life through the bold and sometimes humorous illustrations, rendered in digital gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil. This engaging, heartwarming book offers many young readers a window into Moroccan culture, highlighting a community's warmth and the unexpected kindness of strangers through the perspective of a resilient and intrepid youngster. A delightful and satisfying adventure.(Picture book. 4-7) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
