A beloved Studio Ghibli classic is available as a film comic once again, 20 years after its original English printing. The tale of two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, who have moved with their father to the countryside to be closer to their ill mother, and their adventures with the kindly forest spirit Totoro and his friends has enchanted generations of children and adults alike. A peaceful ode to countryside life, the story kicks into gear when Mei goes missing, leaving Satsuki to reach out to a cast of fantastical forest spirits. Incorporating screen stills, kana sound effects, and stylized speech bubbles, this "animanga" is an engaging way to reexperience the breathtaking visuals of Studio Ghibli in print format. This is a thorough representation of the film, including scenes of culturally specific domestic life, including traditional family bathing--something that will not surprise fans of the film. In vivid full color, this is a wonderful way to engage readers of all ages in a beloved story.
