Drop dead sisters

Amelia Diane Coombs

Book - 2024

"Three sisters reunite on a family vacation and rekindle their relationship the only way they know how--by covering each other's tracks in a real-life murder mystery not even they can figure out. Remi Finch has spent the better part of her adult life avoiding family--especially her sisters. They just don't click. Besides, her unconventional upbringing and major anxiety have convinced Remi that she can't build a relationship with anyone. Period. When her parents plan a family reunion camping trip to celebrate their anniversary, Remi's willing to reconnect, if only because she doesn't have a choice. But then a dead body turns up at their campsite, and their sisterly bonding kicks into high gear. No one knows the ...whole story, but the Finch women are prepared to cover up the pieces before anyone tries to put them together. It's a precautionary measure, probably unnecessary. Nobody else was there, so how could they have seen anything? Between old grudges and new dynamics, a handsome park ranger, and a body that won't stay hidden, Remi is about to learn that nothing strengthens family ties quite like crime."--

Remi Finch doesn't exactly hate her sisters; she's just indifferent. They are older and either tormented her or were annoyed by her as her anxiety started to manifest. Still, when her parents gather the family at Fallen Lake State Park for a weekend of camping to celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary, Remi drives up with her dog, Buffy, in tow. While the rest of the family is enjoying fireworks over the lake, an unexpected guest arrives at the campsite and almost assaults Remi, but her sisters arrive just in time to stop him--and accidentally kill him. They stow the body in Remi's tent, planning to be "surprised" by him in the morning. But in the morning, the body is gone. Meanwhile, the police arrive looking for a man on the run, Remi thinks the hot park ranger is flirting with her, and the Finch sisters actually get to know each other. YA author Coombs makes her adult debut with this delightful series starter with Hiassen-level wacky characters and plot twists and a heroine readers will root for.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Three siblings scramble to dispose of a dead body in this delightful mystery debut from romance author Coombs (All Alone with You). Much to their parents' dismay, Elaine, Maeve, and Remi Fitch aren't close--especially the much younger Remi, who suffers from what her therapist calls "millennial ennui." As the sisters prepare to gather on the Fourth of July to celebrate their parents' anniversary, Remi braces herself for three days of camping and togetherness at California's Fallen Lake State Park. Early in the trip, a frightening run-in with the odious Guy Morton--Remi's childhood tormentor--leads to his accidental death. No one knows exactly what happened, but the sisters bicker and bond as they try to hide Guy's body without tipping off Leo, a handsome park ranger. With the park locked down as the police hunt for Guy, Remi begins to see her family in a new light; after all, they know where the bodies are buried. Coombs laces the proceedings with plenty of black humor, à la Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry, and works in surprisingly moving meditations on sisterhood. Here's hoping a sequel is in the works. Agent: Melanie Figueroa, Root Literary. (Nov.)
