Review by Booklist Review

Covering every continent except Antartica, this concise atlas provides information on some of the spookiest places in the world. Hollow is one of Britain's leading parapsychologists, which explains the book's slight emphasis on British and Irish sites. But it truly is a worldwide collection, with chapters covering "Haunted Places" (a sixteenth-century Indian fort, a Swedish vicarage that is now a B & B), "Witchcraft" (a former slave plantation in Jamaica, a Bolivian market), "Sacred Sites" (cemeteries and temples), "Myths and Legends" (a Spanish murder house, the Han River in South Korea), "Strange Nature" (an Icelandic mud pool), and "Cryptids and Creatures" (a ghost town in the United Arab Emirates, a Shanghai mansion). Each entry provides a brief history with a possible explanation for its haunting, often butting up against the history of colonialism, especially in the Witchcraft chapter. There are also plenty of full-color photographs, which will suit armchair travelers, and a map of each place to put it in context. Add this to ever-popular paranormal collections; it would also make a unique addition to travel collections.
