As befits the term trailblazer, Moseley Braun's career in and out of politics features several "firsts," most notably being the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, in 1993. Although she would only serve one term in that body, Moseley Braun continued her dedication to the advancement of human rights and civil liberties through diplomatic posts, such as ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa under President Clinton and as head of the U.S. African Development Foundation, appointed by President Biden. Moseley Braun's memoir chronicles her rise from a Chicago childhood challenged by episodes of poverty, domestic violence, and near homelessness to representing her country at its highest level of international statesmanship. Along the way, she showcases the personal traits that propelled her success, credits the mentors and advocates who influenced her along the way, and candidly assesses the obstacles she faced due to societal racism, sexism, and misogyny. A forthright and impactful overview of an impressive and storied life in public service.HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: This first memoir from the first Black woman elected to the senate promises revealing episodes in recent U.S. history and is sure to generate interest.
